The Tamar Valley is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - an AONB. The primary aim of an AONB is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape whilst recognising the needs of the local community and economy.

In other words, the AONB is there to help protect the wildlife and landscape as well as archaeological, architectural and other important features of the area.

Mining in the Tamar Valley represents one of the world's longest histories of industrial heritage conservation and in 2006 the area was awarded World Heritage Status.

The Tamar Valley AONB Management Plan forms a management strategy for the area from 2004 - 2009. It has been developed through extensive consultation with a wide range of agencies, organisations and individuals who live and work in the area.  All AONBs have to produce these Plans in order to demonstrate how these protected landscapes can be conserved and enhanced.
